Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Many-branched, prostrate, trailing shrubs.

Stems: Stems sometimes rooting at the nodes, usually 2–3 m long, with numerous short, ascending, lateral branches usually less than 20 cm long, younger ones angled, hispidulous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, very closely spaced, appearing fasciculate due to clusters of leaves on short lateral branches 1 to several cm long. Blades linear–lanceolate, 6–13 mm long, 1.5–3(–4) mm wide. Apex pungent. Surfaces glabrous, glossy, coriaceous and stiff. Margins hispidulous or glabrous. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules adnate to leaves forming a truncate, stipular cup ca. 1.5 mm high, margins hispidulous and more or less dentate with a few small appendages.

Flowers: Flowers solitary, terminal, 4-merous, sessile. Flowers unisexual, dioecious, often heterostylous; insect-pollinated. Calyx of staminate flowers absent. Calyx of pistillate flowers 4-toothed, (1.7–)2– 2.7 mm long. Corolla (3)4-5(8-10)-lobed, the lobes valvate, imbricate, or convolute; corolla of staminate flowers narrowly campanulate, 8–9 mm long; corolla of pistillate flowers tubular, 5–6 mm long; nectary disk usually present. Stamens 4-5(-10), alternate with the corolla lobes, inserted at base of corolla tube; filaments long-exserted; anthers penduous, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior, occasionally partly so, or very rarely superior, 2(-4)-celled; ovule 1 per cell, basal, anatropous; style as many as carpels, 2(-4)lobed, divided nearly to base, terminal, slender; stigmas lobed or capitate, long-exserted, papillose-hirsute, dry or occasionally wet; pistillate flowers with style branches ca. 8–20 mm long.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; juicy; glossy black; ovoid; 8–13 mm long; with 2(-4); 1-seeded; planoconvex pyrenes; apex with persistent calyx teeth. Seeds with well-developed oily endosperm; or endosperm occasionally scanty or absent.

Ploidy: 2n = 220* (also parenthetically 185*; 192*; 223*)

Habitat: Occurring primarily in open sites; often on lava and cinder fields in subalpine woodland although a few collections appear to have been made in wet forest; and one collection (Forbes 480.M; BISH) apparently was made in a bog (Mount ‘Eke; West Maui) but this locality needs substantiation.

Elevation Range: 1,220–2,590 m.

  • The black, shiny fruits used to make lei (McDonald 1989:67). The inner bark of the stem produces a yellow dye; the fruit a purple to black dye (Krauss 1993:65).
